Tech talks:

AI @Twitter by Clement Farabet, Twitter Cortex and Nicolas Koumchatzky, Twitter Cortex

Twitter is a unique source of real-time information, offering amazing opportunities for automatic content understanding. The format of this content is diverse (tweets, photos, videos, music, hyperlinks, follow graph, ...), the distribution of topics ever-changing, and the volume ever-growing; making it very challenging to automatically and continuously expose relevant content. Manually defining features to represent this data is showing its limits.

In this talk, we’ll provide an overview of how automated, content-driven representations—enabled by deep-learning algorithms—enables us to build adaptive systems which capture the richness of this content.

Scoot: Distributed Developer Tool Infrastructure by Dan Bentley, Engineering Effectiveness

We build Developer Tools. We ship features and speed-ups, but they still stay slow and hard to use. Why? Because we lack a good foundation. Scoot's our attempt to build the right foundation.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love React: What Could Happen if the Wrong Person Pushed the Wrong Button? by Erik Froese, Core Services

As backend engineers who work with strongly-typed systems, we consider JavaScript full of "wrong buttons". Someone builds a button, then someone else thinks it's not the right shade of dangerous, so they build an even more dangerous button.

I am speaking from experience. I was tasked with updating a JavaScript application written in a week and having it live in the Twitter codebase with my name on it.

In this talk, I'll show you the tools I used to be effective, and safe while working with JavaScript. And how it turned this elitist backend engineer into one that sometimes even longs for the easy, productive environment that is JavaScript, with most of the landmines dug up by highly trained moles.
